Join Judy, Violet, and Doralee as they take on “sexist egotistical lying hypocritical bigot” Mr. Hart in 1980’s 9 TO 5 – befitting the Team Spirit Breast and Ovarian Cancer 10K Walk, in sponsorship of Team Tough Titties!
Written and directed by Colin Higgins (Harold and Maude, Foul Play), 9 to 5 is story of three female office employees who endure a daily assault of sexual harassment, conservative and ineffective company policies, and a dreary and sterile office environment courtesy of the narcissistic Mr. Heart (played by Dabney Coleman, bringing his slimy best to the role) before finally taking matters into their own hands. Far more than just a humorous dark comedy, this groundbreaking film pointedly addresses issues such as the pressures of being a single working mother, conservative America’s defiance against more advance office policies (flexible hours, personalized work space, a colorful and bright work environment) that many progressive companies and countries have shown actually increase productivity and business, and ultimately, the face of machismo and inappropriate sexual behavior that existed eleven years before Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas brought the term “sexual harassment” into the mainstream.
Every year the gals of Team Tough Titties (http://teamtoughtitties.org/) partner with companies, events, and organizations to raise money for the Team Spirit Breast and Ovarian Cancer 10K Walk, and for the second year in a row they are teaming with the Long Beach Cinematheque (http://lbcinema.org/) to present an audience-favorite classic film that speaks to female empowerment and – yes, in keeping with Team Tough Titties’ theme – an abundance of breasts. What better film than 9 to 5, a film that not only embraces the rise of the woman in the workplace, but as it is the feature film debut of country-western singer Dolly Parton, is no stranger to breasts as well…
A portion of this screening’s proceeds will benefit Team Spirit in sponsorship of Team Tough Titties, but the charity doesn’t stop there – our friends at Lola’s Mexican Cuisine (http://lolasmexicancuisine.com/), directly across the street from the Art Theatre, are donating 15% of their proceeds from 5:30pm to 8:30pm to Team Tough Titties! Come early, and enjoy the best Mexican food Long Beach has to offer before the show!
